The Rose is the current matriarch of the famed Rose line of Gypsy Horses. This line is based upon its mares, who are known for the quality of their offspring. Rose, along with our other mare Silver Belle, are the two foundation mares of our farm. While of comparable quality, they are very different and represent different types of the Gypsy Horse.

In theory, the GH is bred from the Shire, Clydesdale, Dales Pony, and Fell Pony. Rose is relatively closer to the Shire/Clydesdale part of her heritage and relatively further from her Dales and Fell Pony ancestry. Her head, while appropriate for her size and build, is less refined that Belle's, reflecting the influence of her Shire and/or Clyde ancestors . Rose is also larger than Belle, again resulting from less pony influence in her breeding.

Rose exemplifies the kindness of the breed. Her trainer, Lisa Baker of Journey’s End Farm, Bristol, TN, describes her as “one of the kindest creatures alive.”

Now 14, Rose is still producing extremely high quality foals. She has had seven sensational foals to date—Panda Rose (1998), Tessa (1999), Rosie (2000), Prince Charming (2002), Rosebud (2004), and SFG Hero (2005). In addition, by our best count, Rose currently has 25 grandfoals and 8 great grandfoals. All of these numbers will increase next year when her daughers, granddaughters, and she herself add to the Rose line. She is in foal to the Gypsy stallion Poitin, who is noted for his wonderful movement. Whether male or female, we plan to retain this foal.
